Val McLoughlin is an experienced and accomplished painter and printmaker whose current series of bold expressionistic interpretations of the Irish landscape verge on abstraction. His use of restricted hues and deep tones convey to the viewer the mood and the temperature of his home environs. He works in Oil paint on Gesso Sotile on timber panels or Oils on Canvas and also in watercolour, transparent or opaque as well as chalk pastel these latter media often for sketches. Printmaking is also another important medium of expression for this artist Linocuts and Woodcuts being the favoured types of print media, hand printed on Japanese papers,generally in a single colour used to express more historical interests or poetic expressions."African Shield" is an example of this artists concern with world events and human rights, this print commemorates the Nigerian poet Ken Saro Wiwa who along with eight companions was hanged in 1995 by the government of his own country on charges of treason. Half of the selling price of this print is donated to the Cork Branch of Amnesty International.
