During the last fifteen years of my career, I have concerned myself primarily with formal issues in my artwork. The content of the majority of my drawings is form. I am interested in the dynamics of compositional elements: lines, shapes, colour and value. The fact that the human body is the subject for these formal explorations is perhaps coincidental; still life set-ups could be used for this purpose, however, recognition of the figure adds a compelling element of interest for the viewer. The figure also creates tension for the viewer because it has been treated like an object in many of the drawings.
Another type of tension is developed through my use of media. As a draftsman, I am very interested in mark making and the function of marks in the finished drawings. I seek to create a "pictorial dichotomy" within the drawings: marks that simultaneously imply a form within the the composition (illusionism) and yet these marks can also be perceived as a two-dimensional pattern, texture or field actually on the surface of the paper.
Among my artist influences, I include Jan Vermeer(1632-1675), Philip Pearlstein(b.1924), R.C. Gorman and Jenny Saville.
