Ken has been painting since his retirement in 2004, when he attended classes at the Waikato Society of Arts. With a previous career in scientific research he has, in effect, transferred his creative energy from science to art. Previously his artistic experience was in photography, which he has enjoyed since childhood.
Currently his medium is acrylic paint but he doesn’t feel restricted to this, having also explored coloured pencil and pen-and-ink. He is keen to experiment with other media as the opportunity arises.
Ken has not restricted his work to any particular style. He enjoys exploring colour and form in his compositions. His abstracts have interesting compositions and provide easy interpretation for viewers. Currently he is finding Celtic and Maori themes provide ideal ways of presenting important ideas. He also feels that a multicultural approach is relevant today in New Zealand.
A background in science and a long fascination with learning and experiment are driving his exploration of painting as an art form. He is sure that his methods and themes will change as he develops and believes that regular changes in ideas and methods are important.
