Florence Biennale 2005 Comments by director John T. Spike about Adrielle's paintings "umbrelli" and "Energia Indomabile". John: You mentioned that you have traveled a lot and your pictures seem to involve different places of the world. In "Umbrelli" the trees are mostly from the area around Rome, they are called umbrella pines and they are only from there. Well, mostly known in Lazio. It looks as though you imposed them against a cross? What an interesting statement. Because I look at it and I see a cross and the umbrella pines of Rome, what would I think? I think, oh, that I never saw before! Everyone knows that the old word for a cross is "tree" , and the Roman "campagna" is the center of the Roman Catholic Church and this is the Roman tree of the Roman Campagna, Latzio! Anyway, I say all these things to remind everyone how much it is possible to say in a painting!" John T. Spike December 2005, Florence, Italy Comments on "Energia Indomabile...un omaggio ai cavalli selvaggi in estinzione" "Unbroken Spirit", also relates to the Roman thing, and there is a motif of Greek horses. This artist I find very intriguing because she is dealing consciously and unconsciously with a sacred painting. The whole history of western painting until 1800 is about sacred painting, and I find it fascinating that the tradition and the spirit is speaking through her. We need a modern sacred painter. If you think of modern religious paintings in churches, they are terrible. They're so boring and unreal, we need a modern sacred painter in a language recognizable as modern, so, thank you Adrielle, it is quite a difficult task you have taken onÖ! John T. Spike, Director, Florence Biennale. My work reflects a journey. It is a visual journal of impressions from many years of travel and a passion for archaeology and architecture. The work is spontaneous and sometimes mythical in content. The paintings are not planned; as I try to capture the essence of the first moment I see something for the first time. The light of the Mediterranean, frescos and ancient ruins are noticeable influences, as well as the Pre-Raphaelite painters. I feel a deep respect for the civilizations of the past and the great artists and sculptors it produced. The final result is an eclectic composition of these impressions and influences.
