Death of Cúchulainn by Oliver Sheppard R.H.A.

Oliver Sheppard scuplted this exquisite world renowned piece in 1911/1912. The original work in plaster was exhibited at the R.H.A. in 1914.  Purchased by the State in 1935, the work was cast in bronze (commissioned by Eamon de Valera to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the 1916 Rising) and placed in the G.P.O., Dublin.  Commissioned by The Office of  Public Works in June 2002, the second Cuchulainn was cast in bronze at Grifith College Dublin, by Kilmainham Art Foundry Ltd.  This picture shows the new work on exhibition at The State Apartments, Dublin Castle in November 2002.
