Notes: This vessel was inspired by the small pilgrim flasks which were used by early european travellers to carry sacred oil and water home from the holy sites in the east.I belive that, regardless of race or religion, we all need to carry our hopes and beliefs with us. This 21st century 'pilgrim flask' was built with this in mind. A modified version of the ancient Japanese technique known as 'raku' was used to fire the piece. After burnishing the surface of the clay to a smooth finish the vessel is fired and then placed in a reduction pit. Smoke and fire then create a distintive soft black crackle effect.
